Industry Symposium

What is it?
The Quantitative Sciences Course Union at UBCO is running an online Industry Symposium event on February 27th, 2021 from 12:30-2:30 pm PST. This event is meant to provide undergraduate and graduate students with information about different career options in their field of study, and any useful tips to help them succeed in the industry. We are looking for community speakers from areas of computer science, statistics, data science, physics, and mathematics who are interested in speaking about their experiences in these fields.

How does it work?

There will be 4 speakers for 30 minutes each. See more about each below!

Ryan Lecha

Senior Manager – Software Engineering
Guidewire

Ryan is a software engineer with 20 years of experience in tech. He has experience in Quality Assurance, Backend Development, and developing SAS software. He currently is working developing software for insurance companies that uses Data Modeling for risk insights.

Mackenzie Salloum

Software Engineer
Greenspace Health

Mackenzie is a UBCO alumni with a major in Computer Science and former QSCU executive. He has experience in Web Development and is currently working using Django for API development.

Lauren St.Clair

Howdy, I’m Lauren. I’m a web developer based in Kelowna, and a recent graduate from the UBC Okanagan Computer Science program. While I was at UBC I acted as QSCU Event Coordinator and President, and am grateful for the community it provided. I’m passionate about field recording and a proud Casiotone MT-65 parent.

David McGowan

Dave graduated from OUC with a major in physics and a minor in mathematics. After university he began writing actuarial exams and was hired at a pension consulting firm as an actuarial student. He then completed his actuarial exams, as well as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exams. For 16 years he worked as an actuary in pension consulting before leaving to join the investment management industry in his current position at BCI. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and Society of Actuaries and a CFA Charterholder.
